Spring 2020
FTV 210: Introduction to Production Practices
Instructor: Michael Mulcahy
Thank you for tuning in; each film you’ll watch is the result of a lot of hard work and creativity. They were produced as the second of two films each student made this spring semester (students worked in teams of two to make documentaries during the first half of the semester).
For the final film, students developed a one-minute story; their challenge was to depict a character facing a conflict and needing to make a decision.
Like many others, students in FTV 210 this spring did their work under the less than optimal conditions caused by the corona virus. They lost access to equipment, fellow crew and cast; many of them developed their films while moving out of a dorm or apartment, coping with economic insecurity, and trying to stay safe (along with loved ones) during a pandemic. All of them demonstrated grit and initiative – I thank them for the opportunity to work with them!
We hope you enjoy the films!

Project: Smartphone Films
These films were part of an assignment that was limited to the use of smart phones to capture images due to the students’ lack of access to DSLRs and traditional video cameras. The students were allowed to use a camera application such as Filmic Pro to expand the smart phone camera’s technical abilities. Also the students had to choose the Lensing Style, Aspect Ratio, and Color choice to make up the visual style of the film.
Project: Noir Films
These films were part of a group assignment designed to use concepts about space, line, shape, and tone to create visual intensity.
Project: Music Videos
These films were part of an assignment designed to experiment with the use of color and tone in reflecting the filmmakers interpretation of a one to two minute piece of music.
